SharePoint 2013 server architecture – Large server farm

Current project I am working on has a requirement to build the large server farm, including Web App server for 7000 users globally using NLB on Citrix NetScaler. Based on the business requirements above is the infrastructure architecture I have designed.

Before even rationalising your SharePoint deployment, you should get ready with all your prerequisites.


CREATE SERVICE ACCOUNTS:

SPAdmin – Farm Account
SPCacheSuperReader – Object Cache Account Super Reader
SPCacheSuperUser – Object Cache Account Super User
SPPortalAppPool – Portal App Pool account
SPProfileAppPool – MySites app pool account
SPProfileSync – User Profile Sync Account (This account requires Replicate Directory Changes permission on the domain)
SPSearchContent – Search content access account)
SPSearchService – Search service application
SP Services – All other enterprise service accounts

SPAdmin_PermissionsPREPARE SQL SERVER WITH SERVICE ACCOUNTS:

SPAdmin – Should have dbcreator and a security admin role on SQL server which you are intended to use as your database tier.

All these domain names have to point to your virtual IP which will be used while configuring Network Load Balancing at a later stage.

Lets get started with configuring installation scripts using SPAutoInstaller GUI.

Now copy downloaded SPAutoInstaller GUI and SPAutoInstaller to a network drive with the SharePoint media copied to your extracted SPAutoInstaller folder. Map Network drive on all your SharePoint servers in the farm.

Logon to your SP Application server and execute SPAutoinstaller GUI from shared network drive. For more information on folder structure you can visit http://softlanding.ca

1. Load configuration XML from SPAutoInstaller folder and start configuring your farm.

i loved this 2. Click on Farm tab and fill in the details. In this tab you will be entering information about your farm, like service accounts, object cache accounts. I have chosen to leave SPadmin to local admin for now, this is required for configuring user profile service application. You can then later manually remove SPAdmin from local admin.

In URL field use the DNS entries you have made at an earlier stage of setup.

Under step 3, you have chosen to host the web application service on both your web front end servers WEF01 and WEF 02, by entering urls for both Web Application and Site collections, it will create IIS sites only on WEF servers.

For Portal use can use http://intranet for now, however you can always go back to IIS site on both web front end servers and change / amend IIS bindings. For example http://intranet.yourdomain.com can be added at a later stage while configuring Alternate Access Mappings.

Under Web Applications drop down within the same tab choose MySite host and enter my sites URL http://mysite, if you notice I have chosen port 80 for my sites host as well, so that when you actually configure NLB both sites can use same virtual IP.

I have also decided to run all of the service instances on my Application server except for the PowerPoint conversion service and Word Automation Service, these two services will run on both WFE servers. Please be mindful about the service accounts I am using while configuring.

User profile service application Adds support for My Sites, profile pages, social tagging and other
social computing features.
Search Service application Crawls content, index content, and serves user search queries.
State service application Provides temporary storage of user   session data for SharePoint Server
components.
Usage and health service application Collects farm wide usage and health data, and provides the ability to
view various usage and health reports.

Provides single sign-on   authentication to access multiple applications
or services.
Business data connectivity service application Gives access to line-of-business data systems.
Word automation service Performs automated bulk document conversions.
App management service Responsible for storing and providing information concerning SharePoint
App licenses and permissions
Subscription settings service It was primarily used for multi-tenant scenarios in SharePoint 2010. In
SharePoint 2013, the Subscription Settings Service Application is now
required for the new app management service to be fully functional and
should be provisioned regardless of a multi-tenancy scenario.
Work management service Is responsible for aggregating SharePoint User tasks which are
distributed across sites/ site collection or web application
Machine translation service Provides built-in machine translation capabilities on the SharePoint
platform
PowerPoint conversion  service application Provides unattended, server-side conversion of presentations into other
formats. It was designed from the outset to work on servers and can
process many presentation files in a reliable and predictable manner.

Under Search, you will have to configure both Search Service Instance and Search Service Application. As I described earlier in the post, that I have dedicated search server. So, Search service instance and all related components will be installed on the dedicated server. Also, I have decided to have a custom index location. You will have to create your index location beforehand.

Now go to AutoSPInstaller Folder

and right click on AutoSPInstallerLaunch file and run as administrator.

Final step is to CONFIGURE WEB APPS SERVER FOR SHAREPOINT 2013. and

NETWORK LOAD BALANCE YOUR SHAREPOINT ENVIRONMENT USING CITRIX NETSCALER
